What physiotherapy actually involves

Physiotherapy starts with working out why something is not moving the way it should. Your physiotherapist assesses the joint, the tissue around it and how you load it, then combines hands-on treatment with a progressive exercise plan you can realistically keep up with.

In British Columbia you do not need a doctor referral to see a physiotherapist. Some extended health plans still ask for one before they will reimburse, so it is worth checking your plan before your first visit.

Both physiotherapists have postgraduate manual therapy training: one with twenty-five years across sports medicine clinics plus craniosacral and visceral work, the other with needling techniques and a yoga teaching background. Initial visits are 45 minutes and include treatment, not just assessment, and follow-ups can be booked as a 30-minute focused session, a 45-minute extended one, or a virtual appointment by video for education and exercise progression.

Your first visit

A first physiotherapy appointment is 60 minutes and is mostly assessment: history, movement testing, and a working explanation of what is going on. You leave with initial treatment and a starting home programme. Wear or bring clothing you can move in.

Physiotherapy questions

Do I need a doctor referral to book?

No. In British Columbia you can book massage therapy, physiotherapy, osteopathy, kinesiology and acupuncture directly, with no referral. Some extended health plans ask for a referral before they reimburse, so check your own plan if you intend to claim.

Do you accept ICBC claims?

Yes. We accept ICBC patients for massage therapy, physiotherapy and kinesiology. Bring your claim number to your first appointment. We do not currently accept WCB or WorkSafeBC claims.

What is the difference between massage therapy, physiotherapy and osteopathy?

Massage therapy treats soft tissue directly to reduce pain and tension. Physiotherapy assesses how a joint moves and loads, then combines manual treatment with a progressive exercise plan. Manual osteopathy is gentler and whole-body, easing restriction across joints, fascia and connective tissue.

What should I expect at my first visit?

Arrive a few minutes early to complete a short health history. Your practitioner will ask about your symptoms and goals, assess the area, and then treat. You leave with a plan: what was found, what to do at home and whether a follow-up is worth booking.

What should I wear?

For massage you undress to your comfort level in private and stay covered by a sheet, with only the area being treated uncovered. For physiotherapy, osteopathy and kinesiology, wear or bring loose clothing you can move in.

Do you offer virtual physiotherapy?

Yes. Physiotherapy initial assessments and follow-ups can be booked as video appointments for education, exercise progression and check-ins on an injury that has already been assessed. You need a camera, such as a laptop webcam or phone.

We bill your insurer directly.

Less paperwork at the desk, with clear answers before treatment starts.
