ICBC active rehab in Kelowna: how kinesiology works after a crash
4 minute read. Written by the Back in Health team, Kelowna.
In short
ICBC active rehab is a coached exercise programme with a kinesiologist, funded through your ICBC claim after a motor vehicle accident in British Columbia. At Back in Health Kirschner it is billed directly to ICBC with no user fee and no doctor's referral. The first visit is a 45-minute ICBC assessment, follow-ups are 40 minutes, and the main thing to bring is your claim number.
What active rehab means
Active rehab is the movement side of recovery after a crash. Where massage therapy and physiotherapy work on how sore tissue feels and moves, kinesiology works on what you can do with it: strength, control and capacity, built around your actual goals, whether that is lifting a toddler, getting back on a bike or returning to a physical job.
Guarding after a collision takes capacity away, and prolonged rest tends to slow recovery rather than help it. A graded, supervised programme gives you a way back into normal movement at a pace that suits you.
Your first ICBC kinesiology visit
The initial ICBC assessment is 45 minutes. Your kinesiologist asks what happened, what is limiting you and what you need to get back to, then watches how you move under load. You leave with a custom exercise programme and a walk-through of every exercise, so you can do them correctly at home.
Wear clothing and shoes you can move and exercise in. Bring your ICBC claim number, the accident date, and your adjuster's details if you have them. You do not need a doctor's referral.
Follow-up sessions
ICBC follow-ups are 40 minutes of coached exercise at our Kirschner clinic. Each visit checks how the programme went, adjusts the exercises as you get stronger, and makes sure you can keep going on your own between appointments. You do not need any fitness background; plans start where you are.
Working alongside massage and physiotherapy
ICBC pre-approves treatment across massage therapy, physiotherapy and kinesiology, and Back in Health accepts ICBC claims for all three. Many people combine them: physiotherapy often leads in the early, painful stage, and kinesiology takes over as you are ready to load and rebuild. When you see more than one of us, the plans are coordinated so the exercise and the hands-on work fit together.
Our article on ICBC massage and physiotherapy explains the claim itself, and why starting early matters.
Billing, and what is not covered
ICBC kinesiology is billed directly with no user fee, so there is nothing to pay at the desk for those visits. Back in Health does not currently accept WCB or WorkSafeBC claims. Without an ICBC claim, private kinesiology is $100 for a 50-minute initial visit and $95 for a 45-minute follow-up.
