Do you need a doctor's referral for physiotherapy in BC?

4 minute read. Written by the Back in Health team, Kelowna.

In short

No. In British Columbia you can book a physiotherapist directly, without a doctor's referral. Some extended health plans still ask for a referral before they reimburse, which is a plan rule rather than a legal one, so check your policy. ICBC claims after a car accident need no referral at all.

Booking directly

Physiotherapists in BC are primary-contact practitioners, which means you can see one first rather than going through your family doctor. A good physiotherapist will tell you if what they find needs a doctor's opinion, imaging or a different kind of care, and will write to your doctor when that is useful.

That matters in Kelowna, where getting a family doctor appointment can take time. You do not need to wait for one to start treatment for a sprain, a stiff back or a sore shoulder.

When an insurer asks for a referral

A minority of extended health plans, often older group plans, will only reimburse physiotherapy if a doctor or nurse practitioner has referred you. If yours does, the referral is about getting paid back, not about being allowed to book. Call your insurer or check your benefits booklet before the first visit so there are no surprises.

ICBC claims

After a motor vehicle accident in BC, ICBC pre-approves a block of physiotherapy with no referral, and the clinic bills ICBC directly. Bring your claim number. We do not currently accept WCB or WorkSafeBC claims.
